SOCIAL LIFE at THE HAVEN
When someone chooses to move into an assisted living residence they do so for a variety of reasons. Perhaps they need assistance with medications or bathing, or maybe it’s due to some combination of medical ailments. Whatever the reasons are, socialization, and involvement in social activities is a critically important part of maintaining one’s identity and purpose.
At The Haven we encourage our residents to participate in, and become a part of the social landscape of daily life, regardless of what their physical or cognitive limitations may be. The Haven offers a variety of life enrichment programs tailored to meet our residents’ physical, intellectual, and spiritual needs.
Our friendly and courteous staff are dedicated to understanding the wants, needs and desires of each and every one of our residents, and getting to know them as individuals. By taking this approach, staff are able to identify strategies for getting residents engaged and involved, right from the start.
New residents are welcomed by staff and current residents alike during an intimate gathering called our “New Resident Social.” From there, residents are encouraged to participate in a number of different life enrichment programs that include, but are not limited to the following:
Social Clubs - The Haven has a variety of clubs that are directed by residents & staff. Clubs may vary based on resident interest. Our clubs include Garden Club, Book Club, Walking Club, Cooking Club & Men’s Club. We also have groups for our residents that enjoy playing card games - Rummikub & Pokeno are two of our resident favorites.
Entertainment- Outside entertainers come to The Haven throughout the month to perform for our residents. Entertainers include piano, classical music, dance and Elvis rock & roll. It is always a party when music is at The Haven.
Planned Outings – Residents are accompanied by our staff to local stores, restaurants, parks & shows throughout the month. Outings are planned based upon resident requests & seasonal opportunities.
“Mocktail Hour”- Residents are invited to join the Executive Director twice monthly as he hosts a “Happy Hour Social” and serves up delicious non-alcoholic cocktails & snacks. This is a great opportunity for the Executive Director to socialize and spend time with our residents.
Chef’s Special- Cooking demonstrations by our very own culinary team are conducted for our residents to brainstorm new menu selections and try cuisine they have always desired. From Chinese to Italian, we have a taste for every pallet.
Mind Health- The Haven offers a variety of programs and games that focus on strengthening memory & helping to maintain mental acuity. Group-based trivia & word games are just a few examples.
Stay Fit- The Haven offers a variety of light exercise programs to allow our residents to stay active & maintain their independence as long as possible. Chair exercise, Tai Chi & Yoga are a few examples of exercise programs that our residents enjoy.
Art & Crafts - Therapeutic art programs & projects are tailored to our residents’ capabilities allowing them to show off their creative side. Art discussions, painting, poetry, drawing & jewelry making are examples of art based projects our residents participate in.
Another enrichment opportunity for our residents involves giving back to the community. Specifically, The “Haven’s Helping Hands” program brings residents together to participate in bake sales, clothing drives, and other meaningful project work to raise money to give back to local charities. Involvement in our Haven’s Helping Hands initiative is a great way for our residents to maintain a sense of pride and purpose.
Holiday celebrations are a BIG DEAL at The Haven. Our staff goes all out to make sure each of the holidays are truly special for residents and their families. Aside from cheerfully decorating the residence for each holiday, we often include the involvement of children from local schools and scouting groups to ensure intergenerational ties are strong throughout the holiday seasons. This includes fun events such as an Easter egg hunts, trick-or-treating at Halloween, and holiday choirs each December. Our residents love the holiday seasons at The Haven!
We believe every resident has a unique story to celebrate. The Haven “Resident Spotlight” is a wonderful way of showcasing our residents’ life stories. Each month, for those who wish to participate, residents are interviewed to talk about their life experiences, careers, stories & wisdom. That life story is then shared with the community in a celebratory and respectful fashion.
We encourage you to stop by The Haven at Silverwoods for a personal tour to see for yourself why so many of our residents have chosen us as their assisted living care and service provider.
